OUTDOOR EDUCATION

“I think outdoor education stems from outdoor appreciation. There has to be an interest to truly learn about the outdoors. That learning then builds a lifelong appreciation!”

OUR CLASSES

ORGANISMS & PHYSICS

ORGANISMS: PLANTS

Plants are often forgotten about in the world. These incredible organisms provide the backbone for many ecosystems! Learners can practice identifying plant structure, investigate adaptations, and study photosynthesis in the garden & forests of Wesley Pines.

____________

Standards:   L.1.1,   L.1.4,   L.3.1.2,   L.5.3A

ORGANISMS: ANIMALS

Animals are everywhere! Wesley Pines hosts a myriad of species. Learners can practice identifying animal characteristics and learning about animal life cycles in our forests and waters.

____________

Standards:   L.1.2,   L.2.1

ORGANISMS: ECOLOGY

Ecology is all about the interdependence of plants & animals. From the simplest organisms to the most complex, ecosystems are about the interwoven bits and pieces. Learners can explore healthy ecosystems, study interdependence of plant-animal relationships, and learn to classify organisms in our garden, forest, creek, and lake.

____________

Standards:   L.1.3,  L.1.4,   L.2.3,   L.4.2,   L.5.3B,   L.6.1,   L.6.4,   L.8.4A

PHYSICS: EARTH & CHANGE

Change is all around us. Through erosion and weathering, the earth changes beneath our very feet! Learners can investigate different soil types, use observation to understand how geology of the land affects the ecosystem, and see how the water cycle plays an important role in it all. This class can be taught alongside Canoeing & Kayaking.

____________

Standards:   E.4.9A,  E.8.7

PHYSICS: MOTION & ENERGY

Motion and energy is all about doing things. Physical science focuses on the world around us, and how it moves and changes. Learners can explore how energy changes things, engage with concepts like gravity, and enrich their understanding of motion. This class is recommended to be paired with the Zip line, Climbing Tower, or Swing by Choice.

____________

Standards:   P.2.6,  P.4.6A,  P.5.6,   P.6.6,  PHS.5,   PHS.7,   PHS.9,  PHY.1,   PHY.2,   PHY.3

PHYSICS: FIRE & ELECTRICITY

Explore fire building as a means of understanding how properties of matter change and, see how the law of conservation of mass is present in a burning fire. Fire building will be taught as part of this lesson, and serve as part of the activity.

Electricity is at the core of our lives. Learners can discover how electricity and magnetism are at play in our daily lives. This class can be paired with Quickflight to display magnetism at work.

____________

Standards:   P.5.A,   P.7.E,   PHS.9

ACTIVITIES

HIGH ROPES & QUICKFLIGHT

Get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself on our high ropes course! Participants work through our Aerial obstacle course and gain self-confidence and confront fears.

_______________

Quickflight can be paired with the Fire & Electricity class to demonstrate magnetism at work.

High Ropes and Quickflight can be paired with the Motion & Energy class to demonstrate these concepts.

SWING BY CHOICE

Feel the force of gravity as you swing ’til your heart is content! This exhilarating activity challenges participants to swing higher and faster than they may have gone before. With the help of other guests, they are hoisted skyward and then – you guessed it – they swing!

_______________

Swing by Choice can be paired with the Motion & Energy class to demonstrate these concepts.

ZIP LINE

Our zip line flies participants through the air, allowing them to see the forest from a new perspective.

_______________

Zip Line can be paired with the Motion & Energy class to demonstrate these concepts.

CLIMBING TOWER

Climb to new heights on our climbing tower! Through individual effort and collective encouragement, participants can push themselves to do the extra 1% that we challenge them to do.

_______________

Climbing Tower can be paired with the Motion & Energy class to demonstrate these concepts.

CANOEING & KAYAKING

Venture out in canoes and kayaks (ages 12+) and see the wonders that Lake Copiah has to offer.

_______________

Canoeing & Kayaking can be paired with the Earth & Change class to demonstrate how earth and water are always interacting beneath our feet.

TEAM BUILDING

Team Building includes Low Ropes and other activities that encourage cooperation, coordination and listening in order to achieve a goal.

PLAN AN EXPERIENCE

Each experience costs $15 per student, and $5 per chaperone/teacher. Add lunch for $10 per participant!
